Git LFS Installation

July 24, 2017

In order to use Git LFS, you have to install the extension on the machines that will access your project's data.  Git LFS is available for all major platforms: Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Windows Installation

If you're using Chocolatey, you can install it using choco install git-lfs.

If you're not using Chocolatey, you'll have to download and install the files manually.  Download the Git LFS installer for Windows and run it.  This installs LFS for your local copy of git, so after running git lfs install, you're ready to use it.

Mac Installation

If you're using MacPorts or Homebrew, you can install it using either brew install git-lfs or port install git-lfs.

If you're not using either of those, you can download the latest version here.  Extract the archive, open a terminal, and navigate to the extracted folder.  Execute the following commands to enable and run the install script that's included:

chmod +x install.sh

sudo ./install.sh

Linux Installation

Download the latest version here, and extract the archive.  Open a terminal and navigate to the extracted folder.  Execute the following commands to enable and run the install script that's included:

chmod +x install.sh

./install.sh

Depending on which distribution of Linux you are running, you might have to run sudo ./install.sh instead.
